Did you know that hemorrhoids are very common? Many people who get this condition feel like they are all alone in the world, but that is not the case. You would also not be alone if you went to the doctor and were told that you needed to undergo hemorrhoid ligation. This sounds like a really scary term, but the procedure is relatively simple and will be an effective way to get rid of the hemorrhoids and move on with your life.
Understanding Hemorrhoid Ligation
Hemorrhoid ligation is a treatment that is often used on enlarged and bulging hemorrhoids or blood vessels in the rectum as well as the anus. The purpose of the ligation is to cut off the blood circulation to the hemorrhoids, causing them to shrink and then fall off. Hemorrhoid ligation is done on both the rectum and the anus in most patients.
Today, a lot of doctors choose to do hemorrhoid ligation in some patients, but not all of them. Some of the more common reasons that hemorrhoid ligation is done include when the hemorrhoids are severely painful or are bleeding excessively. Other doctors choose this procedure because the hemorrhoid has become thrombosed, which means it has a blood clot within it. Another reason to perform this procedure is when hemorrhoids are protruding through the anus, also known as a prolapsed hemorrhoid.
Many patients don’t know what to expect when they are told that they are going to undergo hemorrhoid ligation. The ligation procedure is relatively simple and will involve your doctor inserting an instrument that has a light and a lens on it. The instrument is called an anoscope and it will be inserted through the anus. The doctor will then use another tool that will place a small rubber band around the hemorrhoid. The purpose of the rubber band is for it to cut off blood flow, causing the hemorrhoid to die and fall off. The band will fall off with the hemorrhoid in about 10 to 14 days.
The hemorrhoid ligation procedure is a very quick procedure that is usually done on an out patient basis. There may be mild discomfort during and after the procedure, but the pain should not be severe. Should you have any pain, your doctor will likely give you pain medication. A local anesthetic is usually used during the procedure, but afterward there may be some discomfort. Hemorrhoid ligation has proven to be a great treatment for many patients, allowing them to live hemorrhoid free!
